Who is FML?
ARTIST’S STATEMENT: I HATE artist’s statements.
I’m really a fairly modest chap and I find it difficult to talk about myself in any marketable way. I also feel that explanations of my intent is purposeless: either you get what I’m trying to do or you don’t. If you do, congrats. If you don’t, then I’ve failed as an artist – or not.
Honestly, I’m just trying to make interesting pictures of pretty people. I do it because it entertains me and it frequently pleases me. I’m never satisfied and that’s a good thing. The day I’m satisfied is the day I hang my camera up.
My grandfather, Louie, gave me my love of pin-up art. He was a bit of a collector – giant stacks of stag magazines in the workshed, torn pages of pin-up calendars filed in manilla folders and nudie loupes, those little keychain fobs that, when peered into and held to the light, showed you exactly what the butler saw. It was that winking, nudge-nudge 50′s sexuality that is unfortunately considered quaint these days.
In my early days, I drew inspiration from the pinups and tried to recreate that gentle playfulness to contrast that weirdly aggressive erotica that seemed so persuasive then. As I worked with more and more models, their experiences and personalities shaped my work and I found myself heading into new and exciting territories. I really enjoy the give and take of energy and ideas that a one on one collaboration between a model and photographer affords.
I enjoy what I do and I hope you enjoy it as well.
